“Kasam Khoon ki Khai hai…Sehar nahi Sanghai hai” Kasa kay Mumbai? How are you? I know it’s been long that I have given you a full fledge review of any movie. As you can see we are back with a complete new look and I assure you there will be even more dhinchakpanti from now onwards.
So this week , Dibakar Banarjee’s Sanghai hits the silver screen. It has one of the finest actors of B’town right from Abhay Deol,Emran Hasmi , Kalki(Don’t shock..she’s pretty decent too :P), Farooq Shaikh & Pitobash.
Shanghai is set in Bharat Nagar, a small town which will soon turn into a very well developed town like the ones in Shanghai . The government plans to build a Business park which is believed to be a new sign of development for the country. However, Dr.Ahmed Ali (Prosenjit Chatterjee) is against this so called development coz he believes that this would just throw the Aam Janta into another corner of town and the later will be ignored by the government. Supporting Dr.Ahmed is one of his students Shalini Sahay (Kalki Koechlin) who gets involved into all the mess very actively (Fukat ka panga lene ka shaukh hai :p ) Jogi Parmar (Emraan Hashmi) (whos talking bery gud englisss with a supergood esmile) is a small videographer/localdancer/negotiator/press and many more 😛
So, the story begins with when Dr.Ahmed Ali is hit by a tempo and the entire scenario is termed to be an accident which was a planned attempt to kill. So, a special inquiry committee is setup by the CM under the leadership of Mr.T.A.Krishnan(Abhay Deol) Being a honest officer, Krishnan conducts the inquiry which revels many unknown facts. Politics, corruption, backstabbing & riots is what the movie is all about.
The cinematography is very good. The riot sequence is very well shot which makes it look very real as if the real footages are used (Hats off!) but the story is very low pace, which at many places bores the audience (you really need to have patience to watch this movie… You can go to the Loo and come back still the same scene will be running on the screen 😛 ).
Direction by Dibakar Banerjee is mind-blowing. As a critic, it’s really very well made. The subject and the twists attached to the story is portrayed beautifully. Somehow it’s not a movie for masses, but for classes and the “multiplex audience”.
Music by Vishal-Shekar is good in albums but not been used much in the Movie. “Bharat Mata ki Jay” is very well shot and amuses the audience. Ghati dance by Pitobash & Emran steals the thunder.
Emraan hashmi yet again proves his metal. Excellent is an understatement for this gentleman. Abhay deol has done very well as an honest south Indian officer who is trapped by the dirty political environment. Kalki has his high points in the movie and has played very well. Not be missed in the movie, the natural acting done by Pitobash & Farooq Shaikh.
Overall Shanghai is a very good movie with a superb performance and story. You cannot term it as a complete entertaining movie (which I am sure not even the director would call it). Watch it only if you like to watch a good and intense movie.
Dhinchak Mumbai will rate it 3 stars out of 5 . Also wish to learn certain Ghati Dance steps from Emraan which would help us during Ganpati Visarjan procession 😛
